A young couple on a backpacking trip finds their getaway taking an upsetting turn as their relationship hits a breaking point. But that won’t be the only thing that makes their idyllic outing a nightmare. Starring Maika Monroe and Jake Lacy, Significant Other is a surprising science fiction thriller that serves original twists you won’t see coming.

With her boyfriend Harry (Lacy) being an avid outdoorsman, Ruth (Monroe) has finally agreed to join him on a camping adventure in one of his favorite spots. Though nervous about the experience, she attempts to push away her anxieties to make him happy and get outside her comfort zone.
Not long into their weekend, they hit a crossroads in the relationship as the two don’t quite have similar aspirations for their future. With things getting tense between them, they’re unaware that something else is stewing alongside them.

What drew me to this film first was its extremely vague trailer, which really doesn’t divulge much of what’s to come. The film quickly establishes its sci-fi footing before introducing us to the fairly likable couple. But it maintains its mystery until you least expect it.
In the second act, you think you understand where the story is heading, and it feels so easy to piece together. But that is when things take a dramatic turn, throwing off any theories you had stewing. And the film is just starting with its twists, offering up another unpredictable and inventive reveal later on.
Another highlight of the film is an excellent performance from Monroe (Villains, Watcher). Something that she always delivers in all her roles. There’s a melancholy to Ruth that Monroe portrays beautifully. This also makes things interesting as we see how the character eventually progresses.

Significant Other is one of those films you want to go in without any idea of what will transpire. It’s an intriguing survival story with a fun sci-fi aspect. The conclusion does start to feel a little hokey at times, and the tone begins to feel off, but it doesn’t fully take away from the clever paths it took.
Significant Other is available on Paramount+
