BOTTOMS: A Horny Teen Comedy with Punch

When two loser besties make it their mission to lose their virginities to popular cheerleaders, they decide to make a female fight club to get closer to their crushes. Starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri, Bottoms is a raunchy yet endearing teen comedy that’ll have to relish in its outlandish humor.

It’s a new school year, and friends PJ (Sennott) and Josie (Edebiri) refuse to end the year as virgins. They hype themselves up to talk to their crushes Brittany (Kaia Gerber) and Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) at the school carnival, but they fail miserably.

While attempting to sound cool, they let out a little lie about spending the summer in juvie. As the rumor spreads, they decide to form a female self-defense club, hoping Brittany and Isabel join.

But as they build a tight-knit crew, it’s only a matter of time before their story catches up to them. And worst of all, their crushes finding out the truth.

Directed and written by Emma Seligman and co-written by Sennott, Bottoms feels like one of those coming-of-age sex comedies of the 1990s and early 2000s (like American Pie or Super Bad) but with a queer-feminist spin. It heavily satirizes the subgenre to deliver some over-the-top antics with ridiculous plot points and dialog but manages to craft a tangible story.

As on-screen pals, Sennott and Edebiri have undeniable chemistry, and their banter with one another is effortless and delightful. It’s one of the highlights of the film, with so much of the dialog feeling like a casual riff happening organically in front of you.

It teeters so closely on the edge of a somewhat heartwarming tale of adolescent friendship and growing up while also having that air of sarcasm toward the films that inspired it. And I love that it feels sort of timeless, as you can’t quite place it as a modern film or a nostalgic one.

Bottoms is such a delight. There are so many witty lines and comical performances — Marshawn Lynch was a wonderful surprise. And it all culminates in a pretty violent and bloody battle that seals in the hilarity of it all.
