Survival and Revenge in Post-Apocalyptic Cult Film AZRAEL

In a post-apocalyptic future, a couple is kidnapped by a cult with plans to offer them as human sacrifices. However, one of them manages to escape and is determined to rescue her partner while also seeking vengeance against their captors. But the journey won’t be easy, as she must navigate through treacherous woods while avoiding bloodthirsty creatures that lurk around.

Directed by E.L. Katz and written by Simon Barrett (You’re Next and The Guest), Azrael is a tense and suspenseful survival story led by Samara Weaving. Filmed in a wooded area deep in Estonia, the film exudes an isolated and rugged feeling that sees the lead character dealing with the most brutal experiences. The film is non-stop action and, at times, anxiety-inducing.

The movie contains almost no dialogue, except a brief scene. This lack of verbal exchange requires the actors to tap into certain depths of their characters to convey their emotions. At the SXSW premiere, the actors described taking on an animalistic approach, particularly for the cult members.

It’s a wonderful achievement for Weaving, who is known as the “Scream Queen” for her iconic scream. Despite withholding that, she delivers an outstanding performance with impressive physicality and nuanced acting.

One of the most impressive parts of the film is the deeply unsettling creatures featured. I don’t want to describe them, as they’re such a crucial part of the story and your experience as a viewer. But they certainly add to the brutality of the film at times — which includes some of the film’s best practical effect moments.

Azrael was one of my favorites out of this year’s SXSW. It’s quite an exhilarating experience with incredible tension delivered through a tightly wound story with many open areas for interpretation with its religious foundation. Currently, there is no information on a release, but hopefully, it won’t be long before it gets scooped up.
