What happens when you take The Hot Chick or Freaky Friday and add a dash of slasher movie magic? Well, you get an unexpected and charming horror-comedy mashup that is the wickedly funny Freaky. A film by Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon, it follows high schooler Millie (Kathryn Newton) who accidentally swaps bodies with a sadistic killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn).

What I loved most about Freaky is its ability to balance both genres while bringing legitimate humor to the screen. It’s wacky and clever, and it doesn’t hold back. The bits are well-timed in a meta, sometimes self-aware way. And while body swap films are nothing new, this film offers a refreshing take on the concept.
While Newton slays the role, I have to say Vaughn is the standout here. The hilarity of him portraying a 16-year-old girl is consistently top tier. He even has fantastic chemistry with Celeste O’Connor and Misha Osherovich, who play Millie’s besties — each adding their flair to the film.

Freaky is one of those films that feels like it’s for everyone. Horror fans and scaredy-cats. Teens and adults. It’s witty and engaging, providing plenty to laugh at and be horrified by. And it’s the perfect film to watch this month.
Freaky is currently available on HBO Max
