In 1954 New Zealand, a group of delinquent young women are sent to an island to learn how to become well-mannered ladies and responsible members of society. However, three of the girls develop a strong bond and decide to rebel against their oppressive leader and her patriarchal teachings. As their situation becomes more desperate, they begin to concoct a plan to escape.
We Were Dangerous marks the first feature film directed by Josephine Stewart-Te Whiu, and was written by Maddie Dai. It is a heartwarming tale of friendship and rebellion that skillfully balances the humor and joy of youth while exposing a darker side of the period it takes place in.
At the heart of the story lies a coming-of-age tale that follows the character of Nellie (Erana James) and her closest companion, Daisy (Manaia Hall). Having only had each other for support in an all-girls reformatory, they befriend Lou (Nathalie Morris), who’s a bit out of place. Yet they find solace—and even strength—in each other.
The movie’s strength lies in the outstanding performances delivered by its three main actors. The film depicts the bond between the trio through moments of hopefulness, while also exploring more profound themes as the plot progresses. The gifted young cast, including the supporting roles, are exceptional and contribute to the movie’s overall charm.
The setting also gives an adventurous tone, getting transported to a somewhat picturesque New Zealand island. There is a wonder and excitement for the girls, which certainly reminded me of summer camp. Whether you’re a native of the island or not, you can connect with it in some way — and perhaps that rebellious spirit.
As the film sails into bleak waters to confront challenging moments, the filmmakers gracefully navigate the narrative while never losing sight of the comforting celebration of adolescent friendship. In the end, We Were Dangerous delivers a beautiful film that’s an endearing watch and one to look out for.
As of posting, this film is awaiting release date details.
