IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE: A Clever & Comical Sci-Fi Horror

On the night before their friend’s wedding, a group of long-time pals come together for a fun-filled evening of catching up. However, things take an unexpected turn when one of them introduces a wild new party game into the mix, causing them to question each other’s intentions.

Written and directed by Greg Jardin, It’s What’s Inside is an innovative science-fiction horror film with an impressive and unique premise — that’s also unexpectedly comical. Starring an ensemble cast, including Alycia Debnam-Carey (Fear the Walking Dead), the film takes viewers on an intriguing character study ride.

It’s hard to discuss the plot in detail without giving away spoilers, but Jardin’s creation is undeniably clever and visually stunning, set in a ridiculous mansion that somehow still feels suffocating — think a bit like a neon-drenched Clue (1985).

It’s not surprising that Netflix jumped at the chance to acquire it after its premiere at Sundance. It also felt like quite the crowd-pleaser during its SXSW showcase.

As previously mentioned, the thing that surprised me the most was how funny it was. I really enjoyed the snarky humor that perfectly blended with the methodically chaotic tone of the story. Even as tensions rose, the story maintained that bizarre sense of humor that made it all the more enjoyable. The third act was particularly thrilling and anxiety-inducing, but still managed to be a lot of fun.

And then, in the end, the film delivers a fantastic twist that is so sumptuous. It feels comparable to Bodies Bodies Bodies with that same sardonic style for a party-gone-wrong, but don’t be fooled, It’s What’s Inside is something all its own and a wicked good time.

It’s What’s Inside is available on Netflix on October 4
